If nocturia is caused by a disease, treatment should be initiated.

To reduce the frequency of night awakenings, the following recommendations can be given to the patient:

  • limiting fluid intake before bedtime
  • consuming fewer caffeinated beverages (coffee, tea, cola)
  • avoiding diuretics in the afternoon
  • afternoon nap to compensate for lack of sleep
  • wearing compression stockings to improve blood circulation

The following medications help manage nocturia:

  • Anticholinergics. These drugs reduce the tone of the bladder and, accordingly, reduce the frequency of urination. Possible side effects include blurred vision, dizziness, and dry mouth.
  • Antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin). Reduces urine production in the kidneys. It may be recommended for older people who have decreased production of their own vasopressin.
  • Herbal remedies. Extracts from some plants (e.g., licorice, Kalanchoe pinnata) reduce the contractility of the bladder and help reduce nocturnal diuresis.
