RELIABLE PROTECTION OF THE KIDNEYS FROM OXALATE STONES
Facilitates the removal of existing stones
Prevents the formation of new stones
OXALATES — THE MOST COMMON TYPE OF KIDNEY STONES
Kidney stones can be formed from various salts and compounds found in the urine: for example, calcium, cystine, phosphates, oxalates, and urates. However, calcium oxalate stones are found in 75% of patients with kidney stone disease. Initially, small salt crystals (“sand”) are deposited in the kidneys, which then gradually increase in size to form large stones.
Most often, stones form if a person does not drink enough fluids and produces little urine, or when the concentration of oxalates and calcium in the urine increases. The development of the disease can also be favored by inflammatory bowel diseases, metabolic syndrome, and impaired function of the parathyroid glands.
Another 4 facts you should know about oxalates
Oxalate stones do not dissolve
Small stones can be excreted from the urinary tract on their own. Special interventions are usually required to remove large stones (remote shock wave lithotripsy, ureteroscopy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy).
Even after the stones are removed, there is a high probability of recurrence
According to data from various authors, the probability of forming a second kidney stone within 5 years after the discovery of the first is 35-50%.
The deposition of calcium oxalate in the kidneys can be prevented
In most cases, it is enough to make certain changes in lifestyle and diet.
The body produces substances that prevent the formation of stones
These include certain proteins (nephrocalcin, Tamm-Horsfall protein, uropontin) or low molecular weight substances (magnesium). The more there are, the fewer stones are formed.
What can you do to prevent the growth of stones
Drink at least 2 liters of fluids daily — preferably plain water and natural juices. This will reduce the risk of kidney stones by almost 2 times. You can tell if you are drinking enough by the color of your urine. It should be clear or light yellow.
Calcium binds oxalates in the intestines and prevents them from entering the blood and kidneys. Therefore, patients with oxalate stones are advised to consume more milk, cottage cheese, cheeses and yogurt. You can also take calcium supplements, but strictly during meals.
According to data from the American Urological Association, excessive salt consumption interferes with the reabsorption (reverse absorption) of calcium from urine into the blood. This leads to an increase in the concentration of calcium in the urine and contributes to the formation of calcium oxalate and calcium phosphate stones. Avoid eating overly salty foods (chips, crackers, smoked sausages). Whenever possible, replace salt with salt-free spices.
Large amounts of oxalates are found in spinach, chocolate, sweet potatoes, coffee, tea, beets, nuts, asparagus, rhubarb, onions, soy products, wheat bran, tofu. If you eat foods with oxalates, combine them with foods rich in calcium. This is necessary so that calcium and oxalates interact in the intestines and do not enter the blood and urine.
Some plant extracts, such as Ficus Phyllanthus extract, prevent the formation and growth of oxalate stones in the kidneys. They can be used both for existing stones and for the prevention of the recurrence of stones.
